O-K Internet, don't freak out. Recently it has been made known that Nintendo has filed for a patent on hardware that doesn't run disc based games. So everyone's assuming that the new NX console (announced at the beginning of 2015 by the late Nintendo President Mr. Iwata) will work without discs at all. Although this doesn't sound quite right, it could very well be possible that the NX console will be a modern cartridge based system. The very Idea isn't unheard of, the 3DS runs cartridges and there's the RETRO VGS console which is currently being funded that only plays cartridges and not OLD but NEW cartridges. So if the NX does only play cartridges, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. But the patent filed was not specific and made no mention of the NX as far as I can tell. One concern everyone seems to be having is that all games made available for this console will be 100% digital and not disc based or cartridge based at all. This would be really annoying and obviously not backwards compatible either, so I doubt that is what Nintendo will make for their next console.
"On February 10, 2015, Nintendo Co., Ltd, filed in the United States a patent application for a "Stationary Game Apparatus, Game Apparatus, Game System, Recording Medium and Speed Control Method". It was published yesterday, on August 20, 2015, and is based upon and claims the benefit of priority of the prior Japanese Patent Application filed on February 20, 2014. The title of the patent in itself sounds of course not very interesting, but the description and claims are quite peculiar. Additionally it describes a controller with a display screen as well as Speed Control Processing."~Rösti neogaf.comThe found information listed above could have been faked for somebody's enjoyment. There is no official connection to Nintendo so this and everything regarding it is only a rumor. Still, I've discovered that most Nintendo related rumors end up being true later on. This leaked image of the console patent is what everyone's freaking out about, they think the console will be Hard Drive based, making it only play digital games. But the patent has a "Card Slot" area listed. This could mean that everyone got it wrong, or that it's just for an SD card. We'll know when we know...
Game on and Keep it Rehl!
